On Sunday, Barcelona bade farewell to two of its most iconic players: club captains Sergio Busquets and Jordi Alba. The LaLiga champions ran out 3-0 winners against Mallorca at the Camp Nou in what was an emotional night for all involved. Ansu Fati scored a brace and Gavi added the third in what was also the last game at Spotify Camp Nou for the foreseeable future, with Barca due to move to the Olympic Stadium next season to allow their iconic home to be redeveloped.
That evening, however, belonged to Busquets and Alba as they played their final ever games for Barcelona – a fact which was later confirmed by coach Xavi Hernandez who stated that neither player would be involved in the final fixture of the current season. The duo received a standing ovation from the fans as they left the pitch for what could be their last ever game donning a Barcelona jersey.

For many years, Busquets and Alba were staples in Barcelona’s starting lineup and have been integral parts of some of their most successful campaigns over recent years. Busquets has been an important part of Barcelona’s midfield since 2008 while Alba joined back in 2012, becoming one of Europe’s best fullbacks over time. Both players enjoyed immense success during their tenures; together they won eight LaLiga titles, four Copa del Rey trophies and secured three Champions League titles – not forgetting numerous other individual accolades throughout their respective careers with Barcelona.
The pair have served as true role models throughout their time at Barcelona too and have been admired by both teammates and opponents alike for their commitment to excellence on and off the pitch. It goes without saying that these two legends will be incredibly missed by all connected with the club but this should not dampen our admiration for them – they are two giants of Spanish football who deserve recognition as such.
Now that Barcelona have played their last game at Camp Nou before moving on to greener pastures (at least until 2022-23 season), it is certainly worth looking back upon everything that this grand stadium has offered us over time – countless memorable moments witnessed by millions around the globe – including those provided by our beloved Busquets and Alba over many years – can never be taken away from us no matter how far we might look forward into the future. As such, it is only fitting that we take this opportunity to thank them for all they have given us before finally saying goodbye – adios amigos!
