“Burnley immediately returned to the Premier League with a 2-1 win over Middlesbrough on Friday to win automatic promotion.
Vincent Kompany’s side completed their return to the top flight with seven games to go after a dominant season in the Championship, where they are 11 points off the top of the table. This is the first season that the former Manchester City captain has been in charge of the club since taking over as manager last summer.
Friday’s 0-0 draw between Luton Town and Millwall meant a win over Boro would secure promotion for Burnley, who are 19 points behind third place.
Ashley Barnes opened the scoring for the Lancashire side in the 12th minute to put Boro ahead.
Chuba Akpom’s equaliser with three minutes remaining looked like it would put Burnley away, but midway through the second half Conor Roberts put the Championship leaders back in front and they went on to claim their 25th league win of the season.
Kompany’s side started the 2022/23 campaign in a disappointing fashion, winning only one of their first five games after relegation from the Premier League last season. Since then, however, they have suffered only one defeat in the league and reached the quarter-finals of the FA Cup, where they eventually lost 6-0 to Premier League champions City FC.
Burnley have caught the eye with a marked change in style from that previously seen in the Premier League under long-time manager Sean Dyche. The team’s possession-based style of play has led to some exciting games and they boast the best attacking and defensive record in the division.
The club can reach 100 points, which is the most points Leicester City have achieved in the English second division since the 2013-2014 season, when they scored 102 points.
Burnley have 87 points and will play second-placed Sheffield United on Monday.
