  • Bayern Munich suspends Sadio Mané for conflict with Leroy Sané

Bayern Munich have suspended Sadio Mané and fined him before the match against Hoffenheim after a dispute with teammate Leroy Sané on Tuesday.

According to several reports, Sané’s lip was cut after the two players clashed in the dressing room following Bayern’s 3-0 Champions League quarter-final first-leg defeat to Manchester City. The pair were reportedly seen arguing on the pitch at the end of the game and had to be separated by teammates after the game.

On Thursday, Bayern issued a statement indicating that the Senegalese star is facing disciplinary action.

The statement said: “Bayern has received a communication stating Bayern’s position: ’31-year-old Sadio Mané will not play for FC Bayern in next Saturday’s home match against 1899 Hoffenheim. The reason is a foul by Mané after FC Bayern’s Champions League match against Manchester City. In addition, Mané will receive a fine.”

The German publication BILD added that Senegalese Manet, twice named African Footballer of the Year, complained about the way he was spoken to by Sané, the German striker, after the 3-0 defeat at the Etihad Stadium.

Bayern did not immediately comment on the incident, but issued its first official statement on Thursday afternoon. Bayern CEO Thomas Tuchel is expected to speak to the media on Friday.

The result against City was Bayern’s heaviest defeat in the Champions League since 2017, when they lost 3-0 to Paris Saint-Germain.

Since joining Liverpool last summer, Mane has had mixed fortunes, partly due to a leg injury suffered in November that forced him to miss the World Cup in Qatar. Sané has been at Munich since the summer of 2020, leaving City for Bayern in a deal worth €49 million.

In recent weeks, the Bundesliga leaders have gone through a period of transition after Tuchel took over as manager following the departure of Julian Nagelsmann. Since being appointed coach, Tuchel has overseen four matches, including a league win over Borussia Dortmund, a defeat to Freiburg that knocked Bayern out of the German Cup and Tuesday’s defeat to City.

Bayern have 58 points from 27 Bundesliga games this season, while second-placed Dortmund have 56 points with seven games to play. The second leg on 19 April will see Dortmund take on Dortmund with 56 points. “Bayern host City at the Allianz Arena on the 18th of April.
